The Free Library's Edible Alphabet puts English practice on the kitchen table
A free online course for adult English learners begins October 20, combining reading, writing and conversation with cooking.

Following a recipe creates reasons to read, measure, ask a question and explain a step. The Free Library of Philadelphia's Edible Alphabet program uses that everyday activity as a setting for adults to practice English and literacy skills.
The Culinary Literacy Center's current class list advertises a free online course on Tuesdays, October 20–December 8, 2026, from 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Participants connect over Zoom to read, write, speak and cook together. Follow the registration link in the official listing and ask the organizers about enrollment, language level and what to prepare before joining.

Other Edible Alphabet sessions take place at library branches on different schedules. Read the location carefully rather than assuming every culinary program is held in Parkway Central Library's teaching kitchen. An online course also requires its own arrangements for ingredients, equipment and connection; confirm those details with the program rather than using an illustrative photograph as a shopping list.
Cooking gives conversation a shared task, so a question about an instruction can become useful practice instead of an interruption. Set aside time for both the activity and the language learning. The result may include a meal, but the broader aim is becoming more comfortable reading, speaking and learning with other people.
